The number sits in the strip beside the cutout, so a long app menu cannot push it off and a full screen app cannot hide it. It costs no menu bar room, because that room was never yours. Turn Audio path on, then switch the Mac's output the way you always do — the menu bar, or System Settings. Your DAW's sound goes with it, mid-playback.
